Privacy Policy

The short version: your notes never leave your Mac. We only handle what we need to run your free trial, sell you a license and let you use it on your Mac.

Your notes

Floate saves every note as a file in a folder on your Mac (Documents/Floate unless you pick another one). We never upload, read or back up your notes. If you choose a folder in iCloud Drive or another sync service, that service's own privacy policy applies to those files.

What we collect

• Free trial. When the trial starts, the app sends us an anonymous identifier derived from your Mac's hardware, so reinstalling doesn't restart the trial. It isn't linked to your name or email.
• Your account. If you buy Floate or sign in, we keep your email address and name. Sign-in is passwordless: we email you a sign-in link.
• Your Mac. To tie your license to your Mac, we store for the Mac you sign in on: the hardware identifier above, the Mac's name, its macOS version, the Floate version and a cryptographic key the app uses to prove it's that Mac.
• Error reports and feedback. When something goes wrong, the app asks before sending an error report, unless you've chosen to always or never send them in Settings. A report contains the error, the Floate and macOS versions, and nothing else: no note contents, file names, email or IP address. Feedback you send from Settings contains your message, plus your email only if you add it.
• Purchases. Payments are handled by Dodo Payments, who act as the merchant of record. We never see your card details; we receive the order details we need to issue your license.

What we don't do

No analytics or tracking in the app (the website uses privacy-friendly analytics, see below), no advertising, and we never sell or share your data with anyone except the service providers below, only to run Floate.

Service providers

• Cloudflare - hosts our license and update server, and sends sign-in and purchase emails
• Dodo Payments - processes payments and taxes
• GitHub - stores update files; the app downloads new versions from there
• Sentry - receives the error reports and feedback you choose to send from the app

This website

To understand how people find and use this site, we use cookieless analytics from PostHog and Cloudflare Web Analytics. They record the pages you visit, the site that sent you, the buttons you click (like Download or Buy), and your browser, device type and approximate country. Neither stores cookies or anything else on your device, and your IP address is not stored. Visits are counted using an anonymous identifier that changes every day, so we can't recognise you across days or other websites, and the data is never used for advertising.

The only cookie this site sets is the one that keeps you signed in on the buy page. Fonts and images are served from our own domain.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep account and license records while your license is active, and as long as tax law requires for purchases. You can remove a Mac from your license at any time, and you can ask us to see, correct or delete your data by emailing hello@floate.app.

Changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and email you for anything significant.
