  • Lectures: Keep the lecture playing. Write down what matters while the professor keeps talking. No pausing, no switching back and forth, no missed slides.
  • Recipes: Cook along, step by step. Jot the ingredients and tick them off as the video plays - no flour-covered fingers scrubbing back through the timeline.
  • Calls: Remember what was said. Keep a note open over your video call and capture names, decisions and follow-ups while you're still in the conversation. Sharing your screen? Hide the note from the share with one click.
  • Languages: Build your own phrasebook. Collect new words while you watch lessons, shows and podcasts. Your vocabulary list stays on screen, right where you need it.
  • Reading: Read with a pen in hand. Pull out quotes and thoughts while you read an article, a PDF or an ebook - and still see the page you're on.
  • Tutorials: Learn a skill, keep the steps. Following a guitar lesson, a watercolour class or a spreadsheet tutorial? Keep the steps next to the video and practise at your own pace.

FAQ

Good questions.

What is Floate?

Floate is a note-taking app for Mac. Its notes float on top of every other window - including full-screen videos - so you can take notes while you watch, read, study or talk, without switching apps.

Can I take notes on top of a full-screen YouTube video?

Yes. Press ⌘ ⇧ N and a note appears over whatever is on your screen, even a full-screen video or presentation. Keep writing while it plays.

Will people see my notes when I share my screen?

Not if you don't want them to. Click the eye icon at the top of any floating note to hide it from screen sharing, recordings and screenshots. It stays on your screen for you, but Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and screen recordings won't show it. You can turn it on or off for each note separately.

Is Floate good for students?

Floate is made for studying from video. Keep lecture notes, checklists and quick sketches on top of online classes, recorded lectures and course videos, then organise them into folders for each subject.

Can I draw in my notes?

Yes. Type / and choose Canvas to add a drawing space right inside your note. Sketch diagrams, arrows, mind maps or quick doodles with your trackpad or mouse.

Where are my notes saved?

On your Mac, in a Floate folder inside Documents. You can choose another folder - for example in iCloud Drive so they are backed up. Nothing is uploaded to us.

Do I need an internet connection or an account?

No. Floate works fully offline, and you can start writing without signing up for anything.

How much does Floate cost?

Floate is free for 7 days with every feature included. After that it's a one-time payment of $4.99 - no subscription. If you don't buy, you can still open and read every note you wrote.

Does Floate work on Windows, iPhone or iPad?

Not yet. Floate is made for Mac and works on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

How is Floate different from Stickies or Apple Notes?

Apple Notes and Stickies can both keep a note on top, but neither shows over a full-screen video without workarounds. Floate is built around floating: every note stays on top, even over full-screen apps, and opens from anywhere with one shortcut. It also has a / menu for quick formatting, and keeps your notes as files in a folder you can open in Finder.

Don't pause it. Float it.
